UPDATE: Gottsui has closed, although a new Okonomiyaki restaurant is soft-launching in December 2016. More to come.
Open your eyes to the world of a Japanese style “pizza” with everything from noodles to beef to cabbage to egg to potato to shrimp. Their main two Teppanyaki dishes are the Yakisoba and Okonomiyaki. Yakisoba essentially is the noodle dish and Okonomiyaki is a party of various ingredients you wouldn’t think go together… but end up tasting fantastic. Located in the heart of Sawtelle, in the same shopping center as Volcano Tea House but good luck being able to enjoy both within a few hours of each other! You’ll be stuffed.
I ordered the Yakisoba Trio Mushroom with Beef. It comes with eringi mushroom, shimeji mushrooms, white mushroom, garlic, red ginger, and an original sauce mixed in with cabbage and bean sprouts. For both meals, you’re provided chopsticks and a “spatula” cutting device which comes in handy and reminds me of a paint scraper. Flavorful.
My friends ordered Okonomiyaki dishes: Hiroshima and the house special, Gottsui. This straight up Japanese dish is unique with bonito flakes, egg, shrimp, pork belly, calamari, potato, mayo, green onion, and their original sauce. The original sauce in all three dishes is a blend of 20 kinds of spices, fruits and tasty vegetables such as plums, dates, peaches, carrots, tomatoes, and onions — definitely hard to replicate at home! All I can say is that I’ve never had a bad meal here and I’ve always left very full & satisfied.
Credit cards accepted. Prepare for something awesome, tasty, and something you won’t be able to explain well to other people without getting a puzzled look on their faces.
