Soup dumplings. This “secret” Taiwanese dumpling house, situated in the heart of Sawtelle, hides itself between Sushi Stop (terrible) and
a pizza place Lemonade (to be opened later in 2015) which I have yet to try. But… you wouldn’t know it as ROC doesn’t even have any signage to show off. Soup dumpings, if you’ve never had the pleasure to enjoy, are protein filled dumplings with a broth inside. For those of you westsiders who want to avoid the painstakingly long drive across Los Angeles to the SGV… this should definitely fill your needs.
My favorite are the pork and shrimp soup dumplings. They are so hot, I’d recommend poking it a few times with a chopstick before eating to let it cool down, unless you want to burn the roof of your mouth. The broth is a calming flavor similar to a won-ton soup while the shrimp and pork combo make it a little crunchy and succulent. I can easily go through two orders of this in one sitting. Personally – this is the only dumpling I loved. I’ve tried a few other fried, boiled dumplings and wasn’t that impressed.
I wouldn’t consider this place the cheapest on Sawtelle but it’s a nice change of pace. I’d personally say the dumplings are a bit pricey as I assume that it’s much cheaper in the Chinese and Taiwanese mecca, San Gabriel Valley. I heard — not sure if it’s true — that ROC shares an owner with a soup dumping house in SGV. To be confirmed at a later date.
If you’re in the mood for something fun and yummy, be sure to try out ROK on Sawtelle.
PS: R.O.C. = Republic of China = Taiwan… interesting fact!
